How did your journey as an author begin?
I began writing books to help children with SEL once I realized my own child needed help. There weren’t too many books that did exactly what I wanted him to view and receive; so I decided to write them myself.
Was it something you always wanted to pursue?
I think unconsciously yes. I have always been a writer. I then transitioned into teaching and then once I had my son it all just clicked.
Who or what motivated you to write?
I’ve always been motivated to write from reading writings from Malcolm X, Tony Morrison, Haki R. Madhubuti, and Gwendolyn Brooks.
How was the publishing process?
It is a real learning experience. I find it is best to know a little something about every facet of the business and process. It will only serve you in decision-making.
Since becoming a published author, what challenges have you faced if any?
I have faced quite a few things to illustrator authenticity issues to redoing a cover over again multiple times. However, marketing is the biggest hurdle because there are so many platforms with different algorithms and there are so many different methods you can take to marketing but your essentially just one person. You cannot do it all. I find it best to focus on 2 and if you can add more then do so, but 2 is enough!
Are you currently working on any new projects? If so when can we expect them to be released?
Yes I am currently working on the release of my 1st book “Now I’m Really Mad!: Dealing with Anger” and the second book in the series which I cannot wait to announce the title that deals with conflict resolution. I am running a Kickstarter for this book on February 1st for pre-orders. Also, I have a children’s book that deals with autism and that pre-order Kickstarter launches in late April.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself helping the world learn to better their lives and relationship skills. I hope to be an advocate for family healing and cohesion. So in other words I see myself continuing on this path because if we help the current children then we are helping generations get ahead.
What’s your favorite quote and who’s it by?
Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these- Jesus Christ
If you could co-author with anyone – dead or alive – who would it be?
It would without a doubt be Malcom X
